Assumption
of the Holy Virgin Mary Church
Assumption
of the Holy Virgin Mary Church is a creation of Usta Gencho Kanev (1865)
who also built the Aprilov High School. This is the earliest Christian
building with a cupola which at the time served to demonstrate the growing
self-esteem and confidence and the truly Revival spirit of Bulgarians
of those years. The remains of an ancient necropolis are close by as well
as those of the St. Petka church – the oldest church in Gabrovo, named
after the saint considered protector of the town. The memorial common
grave of 500 Russian officers and soldiers who died at Shipka fighting
for the liberation of Bulgaria is nearby. A monument of culture of national
significance.
